The Letters of Michael Menahem Gottlieb

At certain times Michael responds to questions from disciples, or shares excerpts
from his talks, in letters to the Royal Way community.

To the people of Royal Way
A radiance of light...and a few words

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam is half the world; Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism is the other half. These major forces of religion set magnificent goals for mankind. All dreamed of the redemption of the race. Forty centuries have come and gone, and not one of the lofty promises has come to pass. In our own century, Marxism in the East, Freudian analysis and all its derivatives in the West, have equally attempted to loosen the shackles and free the spirit. Yet the East wallows in misery and restlessness, and the West is lost in greed and fear. All those gifted leaders with their wise prescriptions...and we remain intransigent. Why?

Is it possible that man throughout the ages has been forced into an unnatural split, a universal schizophrenia? The ancients deny the divinity of our naturalness. The modernists deny the naturalness of our divinity. We have been told that our natural instincts and impulses are, at best, to be tolerated. More often, we were taught to repress and punish our bodies. In our own time, the approach has been “we are our bodies” and nothing more. Both teachings are absurd and harmful, as witness the results. The first caused perverseness and torment; the latter created impotence, dullness, and boredom; and the prospects for change are gloomy.

I am not saying there is no value in the old teachings. Most of what we know comes from those sources. I am saying: It hasn’t worked.

Royal Way is dedicated to the proposition that higher being is possible only through celebration of the body. God is not a theological argument, religion is not a philosophical theory, and spirituality is not blind faith. Royal Way experiences God as the ultimate taste of the senses and beyond, religion as the melting of the mind, and spirituality as the quivering of the cosmos within.

Royal Way is union. Its work is to integrate experientially the natural and divine processes, the lower and higher energies. Left brain and right brain are the two wings by which we soar to our ultimate potential. To deny the impulses of the body is to deny God’s wisdom. To punish or mistreat the body is to throw rocks at God’s temple. Conversely, to deny or neglect our divine essence is to deprive ourselves of our selves and rob us of our greatest joy.

Those of us touched by Royal Way have discovered our wholeness. We now stand at an open window to the sky. To reach for all that is rightfully ours, we must drop past belief systems. What we call our beliefs, our thoughts, our attitudes, our tastes, our prejudices are not ours at all. They have been imprinted on our psyche from day one by parents, teachers, priests, politicians, books, TV, etc., etc. We are saturated and gorged by input from others. How much of our “knowing” is truly our knowing? Most of us don’t even know how to know.

As we unwind our old tapes and drop our alien systems and processes, we create an emptiness, a space, for something new to happen. A knowing of our own reality begins to blossom. An awareness of our beauty raises our consciousness. A sense of our power blasts our walls of isolation. We are no longer willing to settle for a drab and bland existence in this plastic environment. We begin to create our own world. We cram our earth with heaven and tremble with ecstasy to each moment. We discover that every bush is a flame of revelation and every face the grace of God.
